Visibility Line

Pleasure Boats

Large ships - especially cargo vessels with the bridge and accommodation at the rear - have a large
blind spot which extends several hundred metres in front of the bow.
Take care not to get caught inside this little known area called the “blind spot”. Inside this area,
you will probably become invisible to both visual and radar scanning.
We strongly recommend keeping VHF channel 74 open at all times, keeping the engine ready to start,
keeping a safe distance, avoiding the blind spot in front of the ship and clearly
communicating your intentions to the ship.
And please think carefully about whether it’s a good idea to tack across the shipping channels.
Enjoy recreational boating safely without putting anybody at risk.

Safe sailing!
